How pricing is structured

Non-medical home care is almost always billed at an hourly rate with a minimum visit length. Live-in care is usually billed as a daily rate instead. Overnight awake shifts are typically priced differently from daytime hours.

Your weekly cost is therefore straightforward arithmetic: hourly rate multiplied by hours per week. The complexity is entirely in what pushes the rate up or down.

What moves the rate

Shift length. Short visits cost more per hour than longer blocks, because travel and scheduling are fixed costs.
Time of day. Nights, weekends and holidays are usually higher.
Level of care. Hands-on personal care and two-person transfers cost more than companionship.
Distance. An address twenty-five minutes outside Boerne is harder to staff than one near Main Plaza.
Notice. A schedule starting tomorrow is priced differently from one starting in three weeks.
Continuity requirements. Insisting on one specific caregiver for every shift narrows the pool.

A framework for comparing quotes

Get every quote as a weekly total, not an hourly rate. Two providers can quote similar hourly figures and produce very different weekly costs once minimums, mileage, holiday multipliers and overtime rules are applied.

What is the minimum shift length, and the minimum hours per week?
Are weekend, evening, overnight and holiday rates different, and by how much?
Are there mileage, travel or transport charges?
How is overtime handled, and when does it apply?
Is there an assessment, registration or start-up fee?
What notice is required to change or cancel a shift without being billed?
How and when do rates change, and how much notice is given?

Live-in versus 24-hour cost

These two are priced on different logic. Live-in care is a daily rate covering presence and availability, with the caregiver sleeping in the home. 24-hour care pays for every hour of awake staffing across rotating shifts.

Continuous awake coverage is substantially more expensive. If nights are quiet, live-in usually costs considerably less for a similar level of reassurance.

Reducing cost without reducing safety

Concentrate hours where the risk actually is, usually mornings and evenings, rather than spreading thin coverage across the day. Use longer blocks fewer days a week rather than short daily visits. Combine paid care with family cover on a fixed rota so everyone knows their days.

Questions families ask

Why will you not publish your hourly rate?

Because a single number would be misleading. A weekday morning block in town and an overnight shift outside Comfort are not the same service, and quoting one rate for both would set false expectations.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

Yes, minimums are standard across the industry. We will tell you ours plainly when we discuss a schedule.

Does insurance pay any of it?

Long-term care insurance often does. Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing non-medical care.

Do costs change if needs increase?

Hours drive cost, so yes, more hours means more cost. Level of care can also affect the rate, and any change should be agreed in writing before it takes effect.
